Mian Muhammad Bakhsh of Khari Sharif wrote Saif-ul-Malook (Safar-ul-Ishq), a vast poem following Prince Saif-ul-Malook’s journey in search of the fairy princess Badi-ul-Jamal. Read as a spiritual allegory, its couplets on love, loss and the passing world are quoted across Punjab and Kashmir. Prof. Saeed Ahmad has devoted years to the poem: a reprint of its 1869 first edition, a dictionary of its difficult words and more than 150 weekly reading sessions.
