Saif-ul-Malook: Selected Couplets

Three couplets from Saif-ul-Malook that have become proverbs across Punjab and Kashmir — on effort and grace, on mortality, and on the impermanence of every spring.

  1. 1

    مالی دا کم پانی دینا، بھر بھر مشکاں پاوے

    Maali da kamm paani dena, bhar bhar mashkaan paave

    The gardener’s task is to water, pouring skin after skin of it;

  2. 2

    the Master’s task is to bring the fruit and flower — whether He brings them or not.

    Effort is ours; the outcome belongs to God.

  3. 3

    Do not rejoice when an enemy dies; our friends, too, must die.

  4. 4

    The day has reached late afternoon, Muhammad; in the end it will set.

  5. 5

    سدا نہ باغیں بلبل بولے، سدا نہ باغ بہاراں

    Sada na baagin bulbul bole, sada na baagh bahaaran

    The nightingale does not sing in the garden forever, nor does the garden always bloom;

  6. 6

    Sada na maape husn jawaani, sada na sohbat yaaraan

    parents, beauty and youth do not last forever, nor the company of friends.
